KATOOMBA

The Blue Mountains Botanic Garden is a showcase of local and imported cool climate plants and alpine rainforest. Our 28 hectares of curated garden and a further 244 hectares of wilderness sits inside the UNESCO World Heritage Area. Wander the grounds and observe many edible plants, including thousands of kale species. The gardens demonstrate the ornamental qualities of edible plants!

The main feature of this cottage garden is the cat enclosure which respects the environment and the cat. At the rear is a wandering ornamental garden with some herbs and potted lemon trees. The garden is on a terraced slope with handmade rock walls and steps, with a fountain and artists studio at the bottom.

A small garden belonging to one rented flat surrounded by 22 fruit and nut trees with an abundant under storey of herbs, vegetables and medicinal plants. 

Michael J Connolly, permaculture teacher, and Michael Jones have joined the quest for earth repair's unique approach with Sense of Humus composting, companion planting, and minimum maintenance, maximum yield permaculture principles, to become more effective.

The Earth Repair garden is situated on the Civic precinct block, at 16 Station Street corner of Winnifred Lane, just a few doors down from Katoomba’s Memorial Peace Park.   www.earthrepair.net

A four year rotation system for vegie planting includes a green manure session for each bed. Maggie grows raspberries & blueberries and I has an espaliered orchard area for apples and a fig tree.

The rest of backyard is an emerging food forest with several year old or younger fruit and nut trees and shrubs, raspberry section, asparagus and edible flowers, rhubarb, various self-seeded veg (rainbow chard, mizuna, daikon, rocket, watercress, fennel, parsnips,  among others). Three pallet-made compost bays, many worm farms (bathtub, cafes, in-ground towers).

The garden is a peaceful place where permaculture is practiced, people come together, and produce is harvested for sharing among the school community.​

The garden follows organic and permaculture principles with two large enclosed areas for growing veggies. Our food forest has over fifty different varieties of fruit trees, a bush tucker garden and a yarning circle. There are hot and cold composts and a worm farm. We have propagated lots of plants for sale at very reasonable prices. Jams and preserves made from the garden's produce will also be for sale. 

Light refreshments will be available.

Children are welcome; we have a play area and lots of space for children to have fun. You are also welcome to bring your own picnic and enjoy our beautiful garden which is quite easy to access for those with limited mobility.

36.   THE URBAN FARMER BLUE MOUNTAINS.

Set on a lush ½ acre, this evolving community space is in the throes of design, construction and planting. Home to an emerging food forest, this unique space incorporates a communal circle, children’s play space, and a pond performance space. There is an ampitheatre to showcase singers, musicians, storytellers, poets, actors, DJs, and stand-up comics. Our primary purpose is to teach Permaculture Principles; Workshops and Performances will be offered at a nominal cost to help build and connect Community. Come and join us in this Co-Creation. Volunteers welcome. Feel free to register for a Performance or Workshop and check out our sponsors goodies for sale.

Located in the GrowFree Laneway, between Blaxland East PS and United Service Station the gardens are home to the Blaxland Blessing Box street pantry, the first GrowFree Cart in NSW and GrowFree gardens. Several raised vegie gardens with herbs, flowers, salad greens, fruits and veggies. The produce is free for anyone who needs it. The beds, soil and plants were donated and volunteers maintain the gardens for the community. @dirtmum
